Would you believe that my family traveled across the United States in a cover wagon during the Gold Rush? Or that my father was one of the original surfers in Northern California that created the first logo for his dear friend Jack O'Neill (O'Neill Surfing).
Silicon Valley is hyped as the most innovative place on earth. And the reputation is well deserved. Silicon Valley is noted for its remarkable innovation, and is often copied by other global cities in attempts to follow in its success. It may be no major surprise that culture is one of the major keys: Besides the raw ingredients of talent, technology and capital, there are a number of behavioral factors that turn out to be critical to an organization creating major innovation. The lesson we should take away from Silicon Valley is that having an "out of the box", robust, agile and a continous culture of learning is a real competitive advantage. And it’s one that can be reproduced just about anywhere. The spirit of innovation doesn't live and die with just startups. It is recognized in well- established organizations!
